It's great to have a series that is more about questions than answers. My takeaway is that we all have to try to make the best possible choice of all of the choices available to us. Like you say in this episode, The Announcement and Patagonia's move is about systems change within the constraints of the current capitalist system. As Yvon has said, he thought about shutting it down, but then what good does that do to change the system? To just disappear from the conversation because producing and selling anything in our economic system creates harm? On my own podcast I was talking with Madame Gandhi, who is making music from 100% "natural" sounds she records in places like Antarctica. She talked about the opportunity for "infiltration" to shift how people think about music, which is part of an entertainment industry that is as corrupt and extractive as any. Patagonia's move is infiltration. As Andri Snær Magnason wrote in "On Time and Water", climate change is so big with so many impacts the "brain cannot register at such a scale". Maintaining the frame of capitalism, but doing it better isn't a revolution, it's making the best choice possible in the situation we're in.
Yep, all of the episodes so far are there. I'm on a little break while I work on a side project but will be back with new ones shortly. I've always wanted to tackle a more documentary style series of episodes, so maybe The Announcement will be the example I need to make it happen.
You donβt need my comment here really as itβs all been said! But what a feat of journalism. With as much questioning and scrutiny you gave the announcement Iβm sure you will have even more to ask in the coming years. I found the Carnegie quote quite poignant with all that is happening in America right now. βWealth is not to feed our egos, but to feed the poor, and to help people help themselvesβ. This is just the start of a possible change to global economy, philanthropy and wealth distribution (well thereβs hope). Such a bold move from Patagonia, to lead change. But the only one they could make, no? Being a clothing manufacturer when with all the clothing that already exists on this planet we could probably clothe the next 4 generations? I think with some conscience you have to give back to the earth in some way and Iβm glad they are. But this story is far bigger than Patagonia as youβve proved here.
ππΌππΌ really good Matt. ππΌππΌ
Thanks Tim
