1. I’m just back from a life-affirming week in Les 3 Vallees with my oldest pals. I first began visiting this area with the same friends in the early 90s, so it was brilliant to be back once again and to be reminded of the power of lifelong friendships. Thanks to everybody who was so welcoming and hospitable, especially Quentin and Tom from Les 3 Vallees, and my old pal Chris Moran.
2. Duels is out! Very interesting seeing the format evolve, especially having had a hand in choosing the riders. For me, Nils vs Victor was the highlight, with Nils MVP of this round. Watch them all here.
I’ve already had some really interesting feedback from my reader/listener survey. Apparently people really miss Type 2, which has been fascinating to hear. Click the button below to take part, and help me shape the future of Looking Sideways:
3. This new Patagonia short with friends-of-the-show Lauren Hill and Dave Rastovich is really lovely.
4. I like the subtle way Protect Our Winters UK approached the Shell sponsorship debacle. More on their Insta post above.
5. This one comes with a content warning, but
’s incredible Field of View is by miles my absolute favourite thing on Substack. Like many, the news about Aaron Bushnell’s self-immolation caused me to seek out Patrick’s recent extraordinary post on ‘Burning Monk’ Thich Quang Duc.6. On another note entirely, I very much enjoyed The Greatest Night in Pop on Netflix, and this wry New Yorker piece gets to the riotous heart of the matter. Definitely team Huey Lewis over here.
7. I’m looking forward to listening to this important series on the impact of PFAs. It’s by Meg Carney, host of the excellent Outdoor Minimalist podcast.
8. What caused two sisters and a 13 year-old to head off into the Colorado wilderness at the height of winter? This unsettling, poignant Outside story goes into the tragic details.
9. Looks like Ross Edgeley is going to attempt the world’s longest swim yet again. More above.
10. Siri - define mansplaining for me.
Finally - I’m lucky enough to work with some really amazing brands, and I’m thinking of partnering with them to offer my Looking Sideways community some special offers and discounts. Let me know what you think of this idea:
