Looking Sideways: 10 Things
The return of the Db Fund, jobs going at my agency, and an important discussion about 'inclusivity-washing'.
1. ICYMI - the Db x Looking Sideways Fund is back! Yes, once again we are searching for two creative projects we can support through funding (2 x €5k prizes!), mentoring and expertise - find out more below:
2. My agency
is hiring! Click here to find out more, and please consider sharing this one to help me spread the word.3. I didn’t attend the panel and discussion on diversity that Andrew Wang describes in this post, above.
But the ideas he eloquently expounds here are important, and align with some of my own post-Kendal thoughts.
As my friend Phil Young put it when we chatted about this incident on the journey home, “Why are there still so many panels about barriers? It’s nearly 2025. We know what the barriers are. Either start taking real action, or stand aside”.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this one.
4. I’m still trying to sort out Arto Saari for an episode, although I might have missed my window. In the meantime, his Vice doc is really worth a look
5. 10 years of Yearning For Turning! What an outsized influence on snowboarding culture this group has had over the last decade. Congrats to Nicolas, Aaron and the rest of the gang.
Use my code LOOKINGSIDEWAYS for massive ski rental discounts and snowboard rental discounts from my pals at Intersport.
6. Yet another superlative doc from Louis Theroux’s production company, this one a surprisingly poignant look at the PTSD-ridden fallout from the music industry landgrab that was the 90s and 00s boyband era.
7. I found this piece about the problems with Australia’s social media ban for under-16s to be a bit more nuanced than most other things I’ve read.
8. I’m a little late on Intervals, the New Balance Numeric opus that has been years in the making, but it is very worth a gander.
My Finisterre discount code LOOKINGSIDEWAYS for a whopping 10% on any purchase.
9. Finally, two contrasting BBC radio documentaries that have been enlivening the dog walks. A brilliant look at the history of the Theremin ….
10. …and a compelling documentary into ‘Stakeknife’, the notorious IRA double agent (yes, I am still far down my Troubles, er, rabbithole).
Enjoyed this week’s list? Anything you’ve seen the Looking Sideways community should know about?
Thank you for the shoutout Matt!
Andrew Wang’s piece absolutely hits the nail on the head. An increasing trend for privileged, white males claiming they’re providing a platform for underrepresented communities to have a voice, in return gaining kudos for their ‘inclusivity efforts’. Completely misses the point and takes advantage of the socially-conscious sheep following the herd…
