Looking Sideways is proudly ad-free and reader and listener supported. Thanks to all my paid subscribers, who help keep the podcast and newsletter free for everybody, and who also get access to some proper perks. In the last week? First dibs on tickets for my recent live chat with Chris Burkard in London; exclusive access to that episode, which I released this week; and the chance to win a prize from Db by participating in this week’s Open Thread.

1. I’m resharing this week’s On Allyship Open Thread, which asked a simple question: how can men be better allies to women?
I found the responses from women (and the corresponding lack of response from men) to be fascinating. I’ve kept this thread open and unlocked, so catch up here.
2. Thinking all of this is a bit virtue-signally and unnecessary? Then maybe have a quick read at some of the top-line findings of this week’s damning and horrifying Casey Review into the Met Police here.
3. With all that in mind, hats off to Magic Seaweed (not a sentence I use very regularly) for finding room for an alternative perspective with this thoughtful piece on surfing while pregnant by Lottie Lewis.
4. I absolutely loved this interview with friend-of-the-show Neil Madconald on the Slam blog. And I’m excited to hear that he’s making real progress on the book.
5. Self-indulgent yes, but I was so tickled to finally meet Christina Koch in person this week. Christina - a motherfuggin’ astronaut, lest we forget - was one of my favourite ever interviewees, and it was a real treat to catch up for lunch in London while she was over. If you’ve yet to listen to our chat, hear it here.
6. Spring Break is back! My pals at The Snowboard Asylum and the Reason Magazine have resurrected this fondly-remembered get-together, which this year takes place between April 29th and May 2nd. Find out more.
7. Some of the UK skate scenes heaviest hitters have joined forces on London Calling, an intriguing-sounding event taking place this August. Find out more and follow the IG above.
8. I’m well overdue a trip back to Australia to see family, friends and record another Aussie omnibus. When I do, I’ll definitely be trying to catch up with two favourite guests, Tim Baker and Rebecca Olive. They were just guests on Aussie radio discussing their love of the sea in a feature called Daily Rituals, and it’s a great listen.
9. Rebecca’s magisterial piece from a couple of years back, in which she ‘asks that ‘surf media, industries and cultures start to reckon with their own histories of sexual assault and abuse of girls and women’, is also very worth reading.
10. Finally - a powerful film about the perniciousness of everyday racism by Aneela McKenna.
