1. In case you missed it, I’m reupping this week’s Open Thread with Easkey Britton. I’ve said before that the Open Threads are rapidly becoming my favourite part of the Looking Sideways gig, bolstering as they do the community that’s at the heart of the whole thing, and helping readers/listeners have a direct line to guests.
And the latest with Easkey is a brilliant case in point. The questions were thoughtful and revealing, and Easkey’s answers were typically generous, insightful and wise. I know people often miss the Open Threads, or get daunted by the sheer number of threads to make your way through, but this one is really worth it. Catch up here.
2. Something else you might have missed - this riotously entertaining and punchily provocative piece on bad agency copywriting from my
colleague Chris Sayer. Read it above.3. I just ordered my copy of the brand new Longboarder Magazine, a new British journal based in Newquay and featuring plenty of friends-of-the-show as contributors. I’m forever banging on about supporting print media, and it’s even more important when it comes to a start-up like this. Get involved.
4. My pals at Db are just about to release the latest season of their Pack Heavy, Chase Light series, which this season features our own Hannah Bailey! Watch the teaser above.
5. Stop Cambo (you can find out more in the above Insta video featuring Sal from Yonder) are organising national Wave of Resistance protests at different locations around the UK to try and stop Equinor’s planned Rosebank oil field in the North Sea. Find out more here.
This coming Tuesday I’ve got a really interesting guest blog coming from Just Stop Oil’s Calum McIntyre, in response to come of my comments about the lack of interest among surfers and snowboarders when it came to the SAS protest the other weeks. Calum’s piece explores the reasons for this entrenched apathy in our community, and what we need to do to change it. Keep an eye out for that one.
6. I’ve just finished James Bluemel’s latest on The Troubles (watch the trailer above) and it’s completely brilliant, totally devastating and for me on a par with the greatest work by Ken Burns. It’s THAT good. It’s on the iPlayer in the UK and PBS elsewhere I believe.
7. Pete Hellicar interviewed Steve Douglas for The Skate Society and it’s a really interesting delve into Steve career and plans for his latest ventures. Read it here.
8. Patagonia are hosting ‘a day dedicated to the stories of people taking matters into their own hands and showing us how we can work with, not against, our ocean’. Friend-of-the-show Keme Nzerem is hosting. See ya there.
9. Golf isn’t exactly my usual beat, but I’ve been following the PGA (trad. golf establishment) versus LIV (Saudi-backed big money arriviste oilwashers) saga for a few months now.
The latest development is a merger between the two warring parties, which has caught everybody on the hop and is a hugely significant development when it comes to how elite sport is financed - and for who’s benefit. A penny for Rory McIlroy’s thoughts now he’s been well and truly hung out to dry by the very organisation he’s spent months defending so staunchly. Read more here.
10. Manon Carpenter is always up to interesting stuff, and I really enjoyed her latest. Watch it above.
