1. Paid subscribers! This week I posted the first bonus behind-the-scenes Announcement pod, exclusively for my paid subscribing brethren. Catch up above if you missed it thus far.
(I’m gradually going to be releasing an absolute shedload of extra Announcement conny, so keep ‘em peeled and make sure you have your private podcast feed set up).
2. I haven’t seen the Amy Winehouse biopic yet, but I did enjoy this corrosive review/critique by Laura Snapes in the Guardian (who for me is the most interesting modern British music writer).
3. I absolutely loved this short on the impact of Pat Duffy’s Questionable part. Which, incredibly, still stands up today.
4. If you’re are reading this on Friday 19th April, it is exactly 200 years to the day since the death of Lord Byron (and almost 17 years since I swam the Hellespont from Europe to Asia in homage to the great man; here’s my ancient Guardian piece on that).
There’s been some interesting stuff to mark the occasion - like this new Rest of History series (above); this piece from Sam Leith about the eternal appeal of the Byronic shyster; and this typically contrary Terry Eagleton piece.
5. If you thought of the views I’ve been airing about the climate crisis and the effectiveness of modern activism, and the pointlessness of all these over-priced, inward-facing modern climate conferences were a bit uncompromising, wait to you get a load of Dieter Helm on the Leading podcast.
6. Speaking of uncompromising contrariness, Kelly’s retirement seemed like a good point to dust off this button-pushing piece by friend-of-the-show
, which rattled the cages of a few Kelly fanboys good and proper last time around.7. I shared a Sarah Wilson piece last week; this week I’m sharing her great interview with Anna Funder about her brilliant book Wifedom, one of the best books I read last year.
8. My pal Keme Nzerem has been hard at work on a new film about his ancestor’s involvement with slavery - he’s hosting a talk about this called “Black Family History: genealogy, story-telling and ethics in the wake of slavery” at UCL in May - more (and tickets) here.
9. Great piece by Neil Campbell about the recent Technically Doing It visit to Innsbruck for my pals at Db.
10. Finally - ICYMI, my latest episode with Freddie Meadows about his life-changing wave is a cracker. Listen below.
And congrats to paid subscriber
, who took home a brand new Yulex wettie courtesy of my pals at Finisterre for the best question during my recent Open Thread with Tom and Sal from Yonder Surf! And who seemed pretty stoked about the whole thing, I must say.HKC Discount Club is kicking off - click here for exclusive discounts from my partner brands such as Finisterre, Db, Goodrays, Albion and Vivobarefoot. The most intriguing and maybe shocking thing about this weeks 10 Things, was the price of a swimming holiday 16 years ago.
I mean, who wouldn’t be stoked to grab such a great wetsuit?
