Another cracking episode! Stoked to hear you may well be turning on a paid subscription 👍🏼

Thanks Calum. What do you think about the paid subscription idea?

Yeah as a keen listener who’d like to see Looking Sideways continue it’d be great to be able to support what you’re doing! If you were to do a paid subscription would that mean you could pay Owen and guests a fee too?

Substack seems great… I guess having access to your written stuff would be a nice bonus as part of the subscription . Would it be a monthly payment or is it as and when you post?

I don’t think I’ve heard you mention it so I’m assuming you’re not interested in starting a patreon?

No I'm not a fan of Patreon, and Substack works really well for me. It'd be a monthly payment and I'll work out what benefits people supporting it as well. Thanks for the feedback! Much appreciated.

I was pretty interested to listen to this one as I’m sure you know! Really happy for Joel taking on this role and that Gwen is in the tent too!! The first thing I did notice was the male default:

“That promising 10 year old - how do we find him or how do we make him have access to that.

Still a bit surprised this happens as It’s not hard to say how do we find ‘them’ or ‘him or her’ - but that’s just me through my feminist lens.

Again disappointed that inclusivity and diversity were not even discussed at interview has just highlighted the huge lack of intersectional thinking in the sport and it’s development! Really value Joel’s honesty here but a shame the home nations are being tasked with ensuring the grassroots pathways as we all know Wahines have called out our home nation NGB for its lack of support or consideration in those areas.

Great point Matt for bringing the diversity conversation regarding the Wave and Bristol’s demographic!! And thanks Joel for such positive words around the work I’m doing. I hugely appreciate that from you both - we need to keep having these conversations but more importantly - turning them into action.

Again though Joel is so good in terms of athlete development and growth so I’m definitely not attacking him but BS really do need to start showing action for EDI as do the federations.

I wanna be in the tent ……….
